Conquistadors come up short against Keiser 76-52

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 28, 2025) — The Conquistador women's basketball team (6-9) faced its second double-figure loss to the Keiser University Seahawks (12-7) Tuesday. Florida National allowed 47 KU rebounds in the program's 12th-consecutive defeat to the Seahawks.

In the first half, Keiser got ahead early thanks to a 16-2 run in the opening quarter. Mimmi Hahne was the X-factor with seven first-half points and five rebounds. Six different Keiser players recorded at least one point in the first 10 minutes, while Janelisse Marty Marrero's jumper was responsible for all of FNU's offense.

Before the half, FNU trailed by 22 at the end of the second despite a five-point explosion from forward Charlette Leurs. Marty Marrero and Kyla Cruz Baez combined for four while KU shot 47.1% to end the half. When play resumed in the third, Keiser was outscored 23-20 after Leurs and Marty Marrero went a combined 4-7 from the floor for 13. Cruz Baez was efficient and effective with five points in a perfect 2-2 quarter-performance.

Despite FNU showing some offensive fight, Keiser still held a healthy lead going into the fourth frame. KU continued to shoot the ball well in the final minutes at 45%, but Cruz Baez showed grit with six hard-earned fourth-period points. Eight from Seahawk Aly Avrach closed the door on FNU's road-win aspirations.

Marty Marrero led the way with 15 points and Leurs extended her double-double streak to six games with a 14 points and 14 rebound evening. Cruz Baez ended her excellent 40-minute contest with 13 and junior Aaliyah Abdala had five points off the bench.

Up Next: FNU returns to conference action at the Haskell Classic in Lawrence, Kan., starting Jan. 31.
