Conquistadors drop series with two one-run losses against Eagles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 25, 2025) — Conquistador baseball (1-2) saw their bats go cold in 9-8 and 4-3 losses to close out a three-game road stand in Jacksonville, Fla., against the Trinity Baptist College Eagles (2-1). Florida National totaled 15 hits and three errors through both contests and moved to 22-10 all-time opposite the Eagles.

In game one, Florida National found itself in unfamiliar territory trailing 2-0 after the opening inning. Consecutive RBI singles from TBC's Jacob Brigman and Graham Gorman put FNU on the defensive early. After a scoreless second frame, FNU's offensive jump started for an explosive six-run, three-hit display in the third.

Samuel Del Valle made it home thanks to a single from game one standout Christian Febus. TBC's starting pitcher, Darren Goeke, Jr., had trouble placing the ball in the strike zone and conceded a costly RBI walk against Roger Viloria. Home run specialist Christopher Rivera capped off FNU's run with a grand slam that sent FNU's dugout into hysterics. The Conquistadors then held TBC scoreless in the bottom of the third and added another run by Del Valle on a Febus base hit. FNU was in especially good standing in the fifth after Jason Altuve ran in Erick Rodriguez on his sacrifice fly to left field.

When things looked to be going FNU's way at every turn, the Eagles' third baseman, Gorman, pulled his best Superman impression on a three-RBI home run to make it a manageable 8-5 affair.
TBC then went on to take the lead in the sixth inning with four runs and four hits. An RBI double to center field by Larson Lott gave Gavin Williams the eventual game-winning run. FNU executed no runs despite three hits in its final two trips to the batter's box.

Game two saw the Eagles once again take a first-inning, two-run lead, this time off a one-run double by Williams and a sacrifice fly by Goeke, Jr. Both teams were scoreless in the second, and Goeke, Jr.'s bat continued to sizzle after a one-run base hit to right field kicked off a two-run, two-hit frame for the home team.

FNU's first score of the game didn't come until the fifth inning after Viloria's single ran in Rodriguez in the Conquistadors' final push for a win in Jacksonville, Fla. Febus made matters interesting in the sixth with a textbook homer that ran in Del Valle, but FNU saw its comeback hopes dashed by three quick outs in the seventh.

Up Next: FNU's first home stand begins on Jan. 31, as the Columbia International University Rams visit Ernest R. Graham Park.
