Conquistadors bounce back, defeat Fisher 85-31

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (Jan. 20, 2025) — Florida National (6-8) kept Fisher College (0-11) winless this season with a confident 85-31 win to close out the Washington Adventist University CAC Classic. The reigning conference defensive player of the week, Charlette Leurs, had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the win.

Florida National is now 3-1 in CAC play this season, despite 25 points totaling all the Conquistador offense in the opening two quarters. The first period saw Leurs and Kyla Cruz Baez combine for eight of FNU's 14 points. Fisher's Olivia Hamel was a one-woman show with eight of the Falcons' nine points in the early stages of the contest.

Notably, FNU's defense was stout to start the game. FC committed 11 turnovers, and FNU recorded seven steals in ten minutes of play. In the next quarter, Leurs was once again a major factor with six points and six boards. Fisher had no answer for her in the interior, and senior Janelisse Marty Marrero came alive for five points before the end of the half.

Fisher was held to six points in the entire second quarter, which were all off the hands of Ariana Ramos Cardona. Florida National outrebounded the Falcons 18-18 but looked to build on its 25-14 in the third.

The third was dominated by the Conquistadors' 33-point offensive explosion. Fisher scored just eight points in the period, and Fabiana Nieves came alive off the bench for 12 timely points. Leurs was another bonus for FNU, as she added 10 more to her total for the afternoon and Marty Marrero contributed seven on 3-7 shooting.

FNU's Aaliyah Abdala played all ten minutes of the fourth and had 13 of her 15 points in the final period. Rhianna Hodge also got in on the action with two made shots, while Amaris Acevedo connected on two of three attempts to ice the game for the visiting Conquistadors.

Leurs now has five consecutive games with a double-double, and Marty Marrero nearly posted one of her own with 19 points and nine boards.

Up Next: Conquistadors face some non-conference action with a 5:30 p.m. game against Keiser University on Jan. 28.
