Conquistadors shocked by WAU 84-76

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (Jan. 19, 2025) — Florida National (5-8) suffered its first Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) loss this season, falling in a hard-fought battle to Washington Adventist University (9-8) 84-76 Sunday. This was FNU's first of two games at the WAU CAC Classic in Takoma Park, Md.

In the opening half, the Shock held a 44-33 lead thanks to 11 points from Deryanis Colon Velez. The Ponce, Puerto Rico, native went 5-8 from the floor for the home team, while Abby Bryant and Melanie Aguilar combined for 17 through two quarters. Along with good offensive play, WAU's defense gave FNU a hard time from the opening tip. FNU turned the ball over 14 times before the break and WAU recorded four steals.

On offense, FNU's Janelisse Marty Marrero paced her squad with 11 first-half points. Kyla Cruz Baez and Charlette Leurs recorded seven each, but the rest of the team was responsible for just eight of FNU's 33 in the first two frames. FNU looked to regroup in the third, limiting mistakes and capitalizing on shot attempts after shooting 38.5% in the second quarter.

In the third quarter, FNU did just that by outscoring the Shock 25-15 in the period. Leurs was a huge part of this run and claimed 12 third-period points to make it a one-point WAU lead heading into the fourth. Notably, freshman guard Valeria Castro had a solid third with nine points and the Shock's Tye Queen came off the bench for seven of WAU's 15 third-quarter points.

In the final frame, FNU kept things interesting by cutting WAU's lead by five with two minutes remaining in the ball game. Out of an FNU timeout, a clutch layup from Cruz Baez made it 79-74. This momentum shift, however, proved to be short-lived. Amani Ball put her team back up by seven with 90 seconds left on the clock. Florida National went cold from the field and two made free throws by Sanaa Morrow put the finishing touches on the Shock's ninth win of the season.

Four Conquistadors posted double figures and Leurs led the way with 20 points on 6-11 shooting, 16 rebounds and an 8-17 performance from the free-throw line. Castro followed closely behind with 18 points, while Marty Marrero recorded a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Up Next: Florida National seeks a CAC win tomorrow against Fisher College. The game will begin at noon.
