Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Brenda Bogle

Florida National falls behind late in an overtime loss to WAU Shock

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (Jan. 19, 2025) — Conquistador men's basketball (3-13) conceded an eight-point halftime lead and came up short against the Washington Adventist University Shock (6-10) Sunday. The Conquistadors are now 2-2 against CAC opponents this season and drop to 0-3 all-time against the Shock.

In the first half, Jeremy Arnum was the real difference maker for FNU and a major reason for its success early on. The sophomore from Torrington, Conn., recorded nine points in 13 minutes to push FNU ahead 35-27 at the midway point. Gary Adams had a huge role off the bench with nine points of his own, and Ismael Baqai contributed six in 11 minutes. Both teams struggled to control the ball and were plus ten in turnovers heading into the second.

WAU was able to stay within striking distance of FNU in the first thanks to Jordan Anderson and Rande Harper combining for 16 of the Shock's 27 first-half points. WAU shot just 32.1% from the floor while FNU's shot selection saw them hover around 61.9% in the opening frame.

To its credit, WAU made it a one-point FNU lead on three from Emanuel Hylton with 13:35 remaining in the game. FNU was able to regain a bit of a cushion in the following minutes to take a 60-51 lead with under four minutes remaining. The Shock proceeded to tie the game on a 9-0 run after two free throws from Jaylin McNeil with 1:23 left to play.

A layup by Joshua Mila briefly put FNU ahead until Hylton's two made free throws sent both teams to a crucial overtime period. In the final five minutes, WAU and FNU traded points before Hylton's final shots from the charity stripe iced the game. FNU is now 1-2 in overtime games in 2024-25, its only win coming against Florida College on Jan. 7.

Arnum had a team-high 19 points and Adams ended the night with 15. Ralph Laurent had a solid defensive effort to go along with 12 points and six boards.

Up Next: Florida National exits the WAU CAC Classic tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game against Fisher College.
