Florida National grounds Eagles 82-52

NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (Jan. 17, 2025) — Florida National (5-7) rolled past the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles (1-12) Friday night, conquering its third consecutive win in as many games. The Conquistadors had four players in double figures and star guard Janelisse Marty Marrero had 16 points and 16 assists in the thirty-point rout.

Fort Lauderdale entered Friday night's battle with one win on the season against Beacon College Nov. 1. Florida National, on the other hand, was fresh off a spectacular Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic hosted by Florida College. FNU went 2-0, including an overtime win over Spartanburg Methodist College on Jan. 9.

In the first half, FNU established a strong 42-23 lead after two quarters. Fabiana Nieves was the standout in the first period with eight points on 2-2 shooting from the three-point line. Mid-season addition Charlette Leurs posted four in the opening quarter against her former team and senior Kyla Cruz Baez got into the mix early with five points on a 2-3 performance from the floor.

Before the break, Leurs continued to exploit the UFTL defense and recorded 13 in the second. The Eagles' Samiya Morris led her team in the frame with four points, but UFTL shot an abysmal 29.4%. FNU was getting any shot it wanted and hovered around 61.1% before the halftime whistle blew.

In the third, FNU outscored Fort Lauderdale by 10 and Marty Marrero had a break-out quarter with nine points in 10 minutes of play. Leurs and Cruz Baez combined for eight, while Maiya Petit was responsible for five of Fort Lauderdale's 11 in the period. Petit added eight more to her total in the fourth as the Eagles had its best frame of offense for the evening with 18.

Despite its scoring burst, FNU's heft 63-42 lead going into the final period was more than enough to solidify another much-needed victory. Nieves impressed with 21 points in 32 minutes and Leurs grabbed a double-double of 23 points and 17 rebounds. In 30 minutes on the court, Cruz Baez went home with 14 thanks to an effective 6-9 performance from the field.

Up Next: The Conquistadors return to conference play at the Washington Adventist University CAC Classic from Jan. 19-20.
