Conquistadors claim back-to-back wins for the first time in 2024-25

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Jan. 11, 2025) — Conquistador women's basketball (4-7) secured two wins at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic, following a rout of the Fisher College Falcons (0-7) Saturday morning. The winless Falcons fell 101-32, allowing FNU's Janelisse Marty Marrero to collect a triple-double of 22 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.

This was FNU's first game this season scoring 100  or more and the second win in as many meetings for the Conquistadors against the Falcons.

FNU set the tone for this CAC battle with a 23-8 lead after the first quarter. Marty Marrero was undeniable with 11 points on 4-8 shooting from the floor, and Charlette Leurs made her presence known under the rim with four points and six rebounds in the frame. Ariana Ramos and J. Braggs combined for all of Fisher's points in the opener, and Ramos owned for six in a 50% shooting performance heading into the second.

Before the half, FNU started to run away with the ball game thanks to a 26-point second quarter. Fisher was held under 10 points once again (6) as the Conquistadors owned a comfortable 49-14 advantage at the break. Fabiana Nieves posted a strong period off the bench with seven points in nine minutes played and freshmen Kaylynn Jean-Gilles and Valeria Castro all recorded five points to close out the quarter.

In the second half, FNU worked the three-point shot to its advantage. The Conquistadors knocked down four threes in the third, two of which were off the hands of Kyla Cruz Baez. The senior forward had a team-high 10 points in the quarter, while Leurs and Nieves combined for 11. FNU's defense was relentless, and Fisher shot just 31.3% with its hopes of a comeback slowly dwindling.

The fourth saw FNU cross the 100-point threshold on a 26-point run in the final minutes. Olivia Hamel accounted for all seven of FC's points in the quarter, and FNU's Marty Marrero added eight more to her total. Nieves was responsible for 17 of FNU's 18 bench points in the win.

Leurs earned a double-double of 17 points and 16 boards. Cruz Baez had for 22 points, five rebounds, and eight assists.

Up Next: The Conquistadors will play on the road Jan. 17 against the University of Fort Lauderdale Eagles. The game will begin at 5 p.m.
