Banyans stump Conquistadors on the road

SARASOTA, Fla. (Sept. 24, 2024) - Florida National University men's soccer team (1-4-0) stumbled in the second half for a 2-1 loss to the New College of Florida Banyans (3-3-2). FNU had ten shots in the first period before conceding two uncharacteristic scores in the 50th and 61st minute for its first loss at the hands of the Banyans in program history.

The Conquistadors were clicking on the offensive side of the field in the first but could not connect on a much-needed goal. NCF was held to one shot the entire frame and one corner kick, while FNU played its way to three corner kick attempts.

Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week, Filipe Sette Ribeiro, had two shots on goal denied while the senior midfielder Marcos Bakale had a strong header sail past the crossbar before both teams retired for halftime. In the second period, Florida National made a critical error in the open field, as goalie Juan Manuel Fermoselle picked up a yellow card in the penalty box in the 50th minute. The goalie sprinted out of his net at full speed and took out the legs of a Banyan attacker. This triggered a penalty shot that was successfully executed by NCF's Alexander Greaves to put the Banyans ahead 1-0.

The Banyans continued to press FNU's frazzled backline and in the 61st minute, Fabian Donal played a perfect ball into the middle for a close-range score by Kais Sabic. With the score at 2-0, NCF managed the clock well until the 73rd minute when a foul in the 18-yard box allowed FNU the chance to cut the lead in half.

Sette Ribeiro answered the call and stepped up to the penalty marker to calmly deliver the first Conquistador goal of the evening in Sarasota, Fla. Despite some promising pressure from the Conquistadors, NCF's defense was stout. The Banyans held FNU scoreless in the last 13 critical minutes of play.

This is only the second meeting between these two schools, and FNU won the first meeting in Hialeah, Fla., 3-0 on Sept. 30, 2023.

Up Next: FNU is back on the field on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. versus Ave Maria University on the road.
