FNU’s two goals best Gyrenes on the road

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Sept. 28, 2024) - For the ninth time in program history, Florida National University's men's soccer team (2-4-0) defeated the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (1-6-2). The Conquistadors returned home with a 2-0 victory thanks to stellar goals in the second half that silenced the crowd at Gyrene Field.

The first half was an offensive struggle for the Conquistadors, as they tallied 13 shots without manifesting a much-needed goal. The Gyrenes, meanwhile, were held to just two attempts and one corner kick for the opening 45 minutes. Fabio Zandona Tajra impressed with two shots in the frame that looked promising until one sailed wide and the other was saved by goalie Andrija Vujakovic.

Vujakovic also denied Filipe Sette Ribeiro ten minutes into the match as all three of the striker's attempts missed the mark.

In the second frame, FNU finally broke through on a sensational cross from defender Christian Omar Hernandez that found the waiting foot of Jose Luis Hurtado in the 64th minute for the first goal of the contest. Four minutes later, Diogo De Grutolla Ramblas doubled FNU's advantage on an assist from Patrick De Oliveira Nunes that stunned the Gyrenes backline.

FNU dominated every facet of the match, totaling 23 shots and allowing just six for AMU. The Conquistadors took twice as many corners as the Gyrenes with six and forced eight AMU saves before the stadium lights were turned off in Ave Maria, Fla.

Up Next: FNU returns to Milander Park for a 5 p.m. match versus Warner University.
