Falcons upset Conquistadors in late-night thriller

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 21, 2024) - For the first time since 2015, Florida National's men's soccer team found itself defeated by the Florida College Falcons. The Conquistadors (0-3-0) remain winless in 2024 after a stunning 3-2 loss to the visiting Falcons (3-3-1) at the FNU Classic. The Conquistadors had the lead twice in the match but could not deny a hungry and much improved FC team at Milander Park.

The first half was an offensive affair with three goals added to the scoreboard before halftime. Colombian forward Luis Martinez was the first player to earn a goal in the match thanks to a stellar, leading pass from defender Christian Hernandez. An unfortunate foul from center-back Geronimo Luna Grebe resulted in the game's first yellow card and a free-kick opportunity for John Solis.

Solis dialed up a perfect shot that found the bottom left corner of the net to tie the match at one apiece at the 22-minute mark. One minute later, Ricardo Delwing put his team back on top after a foul in the 18-yard box put him in a position to convert a much-needed penalty. The 2023 NAIA All-American easily tucked the goal away from the outstretched arms of Filip Borka, as FNU ended the half clinging to a one-goal lead. Florida National took 12 shots in the first half compared to just two by FC. The Conquistadors also commanded six corner kicks while the Falcons recorded one.

FC changed the momentum of the game in the first ten minutes of the second period with a goal from Jokubas Samsonas on a breakaway constructed by George Roberts. In the 73rd minute, Lucas Pereira Silva left his goal unattended to challenge a sprinting FC player in the far left corner of the field. Leo Hackett whipped a pass to Roberts and he launched the ball past FNU's last defender, Mateo Cigaina, to put Florida College up 3-2.

This proved to be all the Falcons needed as Marcos Bakale earned two solid looks at goal with his head that just missed the mark. FC worked the clock and flew into celebration after conquering just its second win over FC in nine years. FNU took all six corners awarded in the second half and totaled 14 shots to the Falcons' four in the period.
