Conquistadors best Pioneers for first win of 2024

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 22, 2024) - Florida National University (1-3-0) is winless no more after an inspiring 3-1 victory over Spartanburg Methodist College (3-5-1). The Conquistadors outlasted their Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) opponent thanks to a two-goal performance from newcomer Filipe Sette Ribeiro.

In the first half, Sette Ribeiro opened the game with a goal orchestrated by two quick passes from Juan Pugin and Denis Silva 12 minutes into the game. FNU would hold on to its lead the rest of the period, posting 11 shots in the half and just two from SMC. The Pioneers led in the corner kick race, claiming two and allowing one for the Conquistadors.

SMC used some of the impressive offensive moments they created in the first half to level the game with a score from Brandon Porras in the second period. SMC's Michael Torres placed a perfect ball to a sprinting Porras and the forward blasted a goal past the arms of Juan Manuel FermoselleFNU could have panicked fresh off a 3-2 loss to a fiery Florida College team. But instead, Diogo De Grutolla Ramblas answered the call. The forward used his head for a textbook header to claim FNU's second score of the game set up by Santiago Sanchez Lopez's free kick in the 67th minute.

SMC began to show frustration and aggression, collecting 10 fouls in the second half. The Pioneers also picked up two yellow cards in the frame. FNU and Sette Ribeiro closed out the game after he grabbed his second goal of the morning thanks to a brilliant pass from Christian Omar Hernandez in the open field. Mateo Cigaina was accessed FNU's lone yellow card of the afternoon four minutes later after he intentionally took too long to restart play on a free kick.

SMC's goalie Francesco Molinar had five saves while Fermoselle posted three. The Pioneers are now 0-2 in CAC play while FNU has improved to 1-1.

Up Next: FNU looks to take home another win as they visit New College of Florida on Sept. 24.
