Conquistadors split first 2024 Florida road trip

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2024) - Florida National's volleyball team (9-2) earned a 3-0 win over the Trinity College of Florida Tigers (2-9) on Sept. 12 before falling in straight sets to Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) foe Florida College (8-3) the next day. The Conquistadors dropped just their second match of the 2024 season after falling to Life University 3-0 on Aug. 24.

Before claiming its first conference loss, FNU rolled past the Trinity Tigers for the 13th time in program history and the 12th road win since these two teams first squared off in 2015. The victory also extended FNU's current win streak versus the Tigers to 10.

In Temple Terrace, Fla., however, FNU had no answer to a cohesive and decisive Falcon squad on a six-game winning streak. The Conquistadors' light-out offense was held to 21 kills over three frames and with 19 attacking errors.

The first set saw FC start to pull away after it took a 15-6 lead on a 5-0 run in the middle of the frame. The Falcons closed the opening point on an 8-5 scoring run following a kill by Kitula Amaya Morales. Sofia Moreno Bendala, Ariana Long and Elis Cordova-Millet all picked up a block in the first, while Morales and Layla Cortez combined for four kills.

The second was a bit more competitive for the Conquistadors, as they tallied nine kills before the Falcons claimed a 25-15 win. Gabriela Gonzalez made it interesting with a kill to cut FC's lead to just three before the Falcons used four unanswered points to give themselves enough space to comfortably operate the set to their will. Gonzalez's second kill of the frame set up by Ivette Sandoval made it a 21-16 affair, but FC took a 2-0 lead following a tough stretch of Conquistador offense that included two attack errors and a bad set.

Set three was a masterclass in finishing by the Falcons. FNU kept it close early once again after a service error by Angelina Southard made it 5-3 in favor of the Falcons. FC's lead ballooned to eight after Gonzalez and Long combined for three attack errors. Notably, Morales had two straight service aces despite the Falcons' 20-10 advantage.

The reigning CAC Attacker of the Week, Raquel Teixeira, ended the match with two straight kills. Cortez had a team-high six kills while Long, Gonzalez and Morales all posted four. Morales and Cortez each had 10 digs and Sandoval impressed with 16 assists.

Up Next: FNU is back in action against Ave Maria University on Sept. 26 starting at 6 p.m.
