Florida National cruises on day one of CAC Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Oct. 11, 2024) - Florida National (11-2) added two more wins in the 2024 regular season to improve to 2-1 in conference play. The Conquistadors dished out 3-0 losses to Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) foes Spartanburg Methodist College (11-11) and Fisher College (13-11) at the CAC Classic hosted by Haskell Indian Nations University.

Florida National recorded 33 kills in game one of the regular season tournament with Kitula Amaya Morales and Layla Cortez combining for 18. The opening set versus the SMC Pioneers was a competitive 25-21 victory in favor of the visiting Conquistadors. Kendall Meinders' had the second service error for SMC in the first, which put FNU ahead late 21-19. Back-to-back attack errors from Braelynn Brewington and Aurora Aho made matters worse for SMC and opened the door for Morales' kill to end the frame.

The second set saw FNU jump to an early 5-1 lead, which set the tone for the rest of the period. Two service aces from Brianna Grabowski helped FNU take a 2-0 lead in the contest, while Cortez made things easy for the Conquistadors with three thunderous kills in the frame. Despite the deficit, SMC battled in the third before succumbing to a 27-25 loss. Morales was a true difference-maker, recording four of her eight kills in the game just in the final set. Sofia Moreno Bendala was also active in the frame, picking up a kill and ending the afternoon with five kills and two assisted blocks.

Game two was another clinic for the Conquistadors at the net.

FNU won the first set after jumping to an 8-2 lead off three bad sets from the Falcons. Morales continued her stunning campaign on day one with four kills in the first set, as FNU closed out the Falcons for the fourth consecutive victory over Fisher in program history. The Conquistadors claimed a 25-13 win in set two and a 25-17 win in the third for their second sweep of the day.

Up Next: The Conquistadors look to close out the second day of the CAC Classic tomorrow with a three-game afternoon beginning at 12:00 p.m. versus SMC.
