Conquistadors dominate for 5-0 run at CAC Classic

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Oct. 12, 2024) - The Conquistadors (14-2) exit the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic with a perfect 5-0 record after decisive victories versus Spartanburg Methodist College (12-13), Haskell Indian Nations University (8-24) and Fisher College (15-11).

The Conquistador did not drop a single set through all three contests and combined for a total of 113 kills in Lawrence, Kan. Opposite SMC, the Conquistadors were extremely efficient against the visiting Pioneers. FNU recorded 11 kills in a close 25-19 win in set one. Kitula Amaya Morales was seemingly unstoppable in the frame, converting four attacks into much-needed kills. Elis Cordova-Millet made it 23-18 for FNU down the stretch and an unfortunate service error from Tristan Craine put the Conquistadors in the driver's seat at 1-0.

SMC continued to struggle with FNU's duo comprised of Ivette Sandoval and Morales. The outside hitter slammed down seven kills perfectly orchestrated by Sandoval, Taylor Purdy and Emily Robello to push FNU to a 25-15 victory in set two. Layla Cortez and Sofia Moreno Bendala combined for four kills in the final frame to defeat the Pioneers for the second time in two days. Morales had 17 kills and 10 digs in the win, while Sandoval had a team-high 12 digs and 15 assists.

Game two of FNU's three-game slate was another show of power for the Conquistador offense. Emily Robello had a breakout contest with 13 assists, while Purdy, Sandoval and Morales tallied double-digit digs.Cortez also began making some noise with 13 kills in the dominant win over Haskell. The opening set saw FNU take an 18-7 lead on a kill from Bendala as FNU took the lead 25-10 on an attacking error by Haskell's Tressa Jim.

Ariana long was stellar in the second frame with two kills before a stagnant Haskell offense lost the set 25-12 on a bad attack by Sandra St. Clair. Long's fourth kill of the match and two kills from Sara Lizano Joya closed out the third period for FNU 25-15. But Florida National had to quickly turn around and face a relatively fresh team in the Fisher College Falcons.

Collectively, FNU shut down Fisher's offense and kept their production for most of the contest in the negative. FNU took a 2-0 lead with two 25-14 wins to open the final contest of the evening. Kills by Gabriela Gonzalez and Brianna Grabowski ended sets one and two, respectively, and FNU aimed to take care of business in the third.

After a stunning 25-16 set win to claim its 14th win of 2024, the Conquistadors recorded a total of 34 kills and 76 digs as the sun set in Lawrence, Kan.

Up Next: Before heading home, FNU will once again battle Haskell tomorrow at 4 p.m.
