Volleyball handles Haskell 3-1 Sunday

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Oct. 13, 2024) - Florida National (15-2) exits a three-day, six-game stay in Lawrence, Kan., with a convincing 3-1 win over Haskell Indian Nations University (8-25). This was the second time FNU bested Haskell this week, defeating the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic host 3-0 on Oct. 12.

Florida National was well-balanced statistically, with eight different players recording at least one kill. Ivette Sandoval and freshman Emily Robello combined for 30 assists, while Kitula Amaya Morales impressed with a team-high 17 digs.

In the opening set, FNU got off to a great start, forcing a timeout after taking a commanding 7-0 lead. Haskell was held to just 12 points in the first, and FNU thrived off 11 attack errors committed by the home team. In fact, back-to-back offensive miscues from Tressa Jim and Sandra St. Clair closed the set for the Conquistadors 25-12.

In the second, Morales was electric with four kills to help push FNU to a 2-0 lead on a 25-17 performance. The Miami native also recorded a block before a service ace for Robello ended the frame. Haskell battled back in the third, taking an early lead in the set before trading points with the Conquistadors through the majority of the period. A kill by Mikeya Sheppard kicked off a 6-4 run for Haskell to help force a fourth set and hand FNU its first set loss this week.

Despite the momentum shift, FNU took care of business in the third 25-20 thanks to four kills from Sofia Moreno Bendala. Layla Cortez made some noise in the final frame with four kills of her own, and FNU improved to 6-1 in conference play this year.

Up Next: FNU hosts Trinity Baptist College on Oct. 22 for a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 a.m.
