Conquistadors rocked by Royals in 93-83 loss

LAKE WALES, Fla. (Dec. 13, 2024) — Conquistador men's basketball (1-10) suffered a 93-83 loss to the Warner University Royals (5-5) Friday night to close out its contests for the rest of the calendar year. FNU is now 0-7 against Sun Conference opponents this season and has fallen in four of its last five games.

Florida National has not had the best of luck against the Warner Royals in recent history, losing in five of its last six meetings against WU. FNU dropped to 1-7 on the road at the Turner Athletic Center all-time despite inspiring performances from duo Caelum Ethridge and Gary Adams. Warner did a masterful job of moving the ball, posting 25 assists to combat one of FNU's best offensive displays this season.

The opening period was a show of toughness from the Royals. WU commanded a 38-24 lead heading into halftime, paced by 11 points from Jamal Norris. The Royals shot the ball efficiently at 48.4%, and FNU struggled to keep things close at 31%. Despite FNU's shooting woes, Ethridge continues to prove to be the Conquistadors' most consistent playmaker. He ended the opener with 11 points and two rebounds and was also credited with FNU's lone made three of the period. The Conquistadors headed into the break 1-9 from long range.

In the second half, Warner's Jack Voth put his team up by 23 on a smooth jumper from behind the arch with 15 minutes left in the game. Florida National once again clawed its way back late in the second half, cutting a 14-point Warner advantage with three minutes left to seven on a layup from Ethridge at the 42-second mark. Adams was a major part of this run with an astounding 24 points in the period after being held scoreless in the first. The junior was almost perfect from the field, shooting 9-10 and 5-6 from the free-throw line.

Forty-two seconds, however, was not enough time for Florida National to threaten Warner's cushion. Skyler Scull and Blaize Darling went 6-6 from the charity stripe in the final seconds to drop FNU to 1-10 this season. Notably, Ethridge led all players with 25 points and had a team-high nine rebounds.

Up Next: Men's basketball enjoys a brief hiatus before returning to action on Jan. 7 against Florida College at the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic.
