Conquistadors tame Tigers in 26-point road rout

NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (Dec. 12, 2024) — Florida National women's basketball (2-6) grabbed a much-needed win Thursday afternoon in a thrilling 81-55 victory over the Trinity College of Florida Tigers (2-4). This was the first-ever game between these two USCAA institutions, and FNU dominated from start to finish.

In the first quarter, Florida National claimed a 16-13 lead thanks to eight points from star guard Janelisse Marty Marrero. Defensive standout Kyla Cruz Baez and freshman Valeria Castro combined for five points in the opening ten minutes. The second quarter was the Cruz Baez show, as the senior forward knocked down two threes en route to nine points heading into the break. Junior Aaliyah Abdala also found her stride in the second with six points, and FNU carried a comfortable 24-point lead after outscoring the Tigers by 17 in the second.

The second half saw another stellar stretch for Marty Marrero. She posted 15 of FNU's 24 in the third and FNU allowed just 17 points to TCF. In the final 10 minutes, Hermione Hicks found her shot behind the three-point line and ended the night with six points in 28 minutes of play. Abdala recorded 11 points with three coming in the fourth frame.

Marty Marrero led all players with 30 points and grabbed a triple-double with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. She also did some work on the defensive end with two steals. TCF's Lauren Sadowski paced her team with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Tigers Bre'Anna Ortega and Desiree Greene combined for 22 of TCF's 55.
