Conquistadors produce valiant effort in 82-45 loss to STU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Jan. 7, 2025) — Florida National (2-7) executed a solid first quarter before succumbing to an 82-45 loss to the St. Thomas University Bobcats (9-5). FNU's Kyla Cruz Baez impressed with eight points and three steals in the opening half, while senior transfer Charlette Leurs made her season debut in FNU's seventh consecutive loss against its cross-town rival.

In the first period, FNU trailed 16-11 despite leading by as many as seven. STU's physicality was the real star of the show after a less-than-ideal offensive showing for both teams. The Bobcats led the way 10-4 in defensive rebounds and collected six offensive boards in the first.

Notably, Jasmine Worthy put STU ahead 10-9 with just under three minutes remaining in the period and two good free throws by Kaylynn Jean-Gilles helped FNU trail by just five entering the second quarter. STU, however, continued to push the pace to end the half. The Bobcats outscored FNU by seven for a comfortable 37-25 lead at the break.

Senior guard Janelisse Marty Marrero had a tough offensive display to start the contest, recording just four points through the first two periods. But the guard went to work underneath the basket, tallying four defensive rebounds. Sophie Vandyke proved to be the real difference maker in the frame as she went to the bench in the final 90 seconds of the half with six points.

STU put its foot on the gas in the third quarter, allowing only eight FNU points to start the second half of the contest. The home teams shot 52.4% from the floor as FNU's offense hit a wall, culminating in a 3-15 shooting performance in the quarter. Leurs and Cruz Baez combined for six of FNU's eight in the period.

The fourth saw Marty Marrero end the night with 12 points on a made three and Leurs totaled 12 as well thanks to a layup with 3:34 remaining in the game. FNU was outscored 19-12 in the final frame and STU shot 46.6 in its ninth win of the 2024-25 season.

Up Next: FNU faces a two-game slate at the CAC Classic in Temple Terrace, Fla., starting with a Thursday afternoon battle against Spartanburg Methodist College. The game will commence at 5 p.m.
