Florida National denied victory in 78-76 loss to NCAA DII Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Nov. 30, 2024) — Conquistador men's basketball (1-7) had a valiant performance against the NCAA DII Barry University Buccaneers (3-3) on Saturday. Florida National had its fragile one-point lead erased with 10 seconds remaining before Barry ended the game on the defensive end.

The Conquistadors came into Miami Shores, Fla., with their first win of 2024-25 under their belt. FNU defeated Brewton-Parker College 77-74 on the final day of the Keiser University Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 27.

Florida National showed its teeth in the first half, playing effective full-court defense to force six BU turnovers. A crafty layup from Cameron Johnson gave FNU a 16-13 lead, but Barry would end the half ahead 45-32. The home team went on a 12-1 run to close out the frame, and FNU looked to regain some of its offensive fire in the second half.

FNU outscored Barry 44-33 in the second but trailed at the least opportune time. Johnson and Ralph Laurent combined for five points to give FNU a 72-70 lead in the final three minutes. FNU had obliterated an 11-point deficit to take a delicate lead in the closing minutes. Senior Malik Stanley was just what the doctor ordered for the Bucs, as the guard went to work for five of Barry's final eight points.

Two made free throws from Johnson with 18 seconds left made it a 76-75 affair and Stanley's ice-cold 2-2 performance from the charity stripe in Barry's next series on offense put real pressure on FNU to get a timely score. Johnson tried to make something happen by attacking the rim but was blocked by Akeem Crandon. FNU put Stanley on the line once again and was forced to settle for a hard-fought loss to the Barry Bucs for the sixth time in program history.

Johnson ended his spectacular night leading all scores with 25 points in 35 minutes of play.  Caelum Ethridge, Jeremy Arnum and Laurent ended the night in double figures, while Arnum had a team-high seven rebounds.

Up Next: FNU is in Sarasota, Fla., on Dec. 4 against New College of Florida at 7 p.m.
