Banyans root out Conquistadors 86-75

BRADENTON, Fla. (Dec. 4, 2024) — Florida National men's basketball (1-8) was outlasted by a talented New College of Florida Banyans (7-3) squad on Wednesday. The Banyans' 86-75 win is the largest victory over FNU in the young program's history, and the Conquistadors drop to 0-2 overall against NCF.

In the first half, FNU trailed 37-30 after exceptional period of basketball from Matias Montezuma. The sophomore found his shot early and scored nine points, all from three-point range. Reigning Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Defensive Player of the Week Caelum Ethridge posted four points but was huge on the glass for a team-high seven rebounds in the frame.

Despite these performances, the Banyans kept extinguishing all of FNU's scoring runs with timely possessions on the offensive end. NCF led by as many as 11 and found themselves ahead 82.5% of the time in the opener. Charlie Yoder was the star of the show for the home team, posting 10 points before the break.

The second period was another close affair, but the Banyans had just enough momentum down the stretch to close the game. NCF outscored FNU 49-45 and were able to pull away after layups from Montezuma and Ethridge made it 66-63. New College proceeded to go on a 14-5 run with 1:30 remaining in the contest.

NCF's final push iced out a brilliant 26-point, 11-rebound performance from Ethridge. Jesus Rivas also posted one of his best games this season with a near double-double of 11 points and nine boards. Montezuma's hot start in the first cooled off significantly in the second, and he ended the night with 14 points.
