Conquistadors drop five-set battle to Lyon

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 8, 2024) — Florida National (21-4) fell to Lyon College (20-8) in the semi-final match of the USCAA Championship. Lyon pulled off a 15-11 win in set five to send FNU to the third place match tomorrow at noon.

Lyon took the first set 25-23, using 16 kills to edge ahead of the Conquistadors. Kylee Sabella had the set-closing kill after a set pass from Madeline Hopson. Elis Cordova-Millet was responsible for three of FNU's nine kills in the opener and the Conquistadors regrouped in the second for an impressive frame to level the contest once again.

FNU dominated set two 25-16 despite trailing Lyon in the kills 13-10. Three attacking missteps in the first few plays pushed FNU to a 5-0 lead. Kitula Amaya Morales's successful attack made it 13-6 later on and FNU posted a 12-10 run to close out the second. The following frame was another show of dominance for FNU. The Conquistadors took a 2-1 lead after capturing the third set 25-19. Five kills from Layla Cortez came just in time to halt a very potent Lyon offense.

Gabriela Gonzalez and Cordova-Millet paired up for two back-to-back blocks to close out the third and the Conquistadors looked primed to close the game out for their second 3-1 win since arriving in Uniontown, Pa. To Lyon's credit, they did not cower when faced with turbulence against the tournament's No. 1 overall seed. They forced a fifth set after claiming an impressive 25-15 victory in the fourth. FNU was held to just five kills and committed nine attacking errors.

Lyon used this new life to take a 3-0 lead in the fifth until an error from Cristen Cleveland gave FNU its first point of the set. Sabella made it a 10-4 affair for Lyon and FNU was out of answers. Mollie McCoy had the game-ending kill and sent her team to the title match against No. 2-seeded Shaw University.

Daviona Bernard had a team-high three service aces. Moreno Bendala and Morales each had seven kills, while Cortez led the way with 10. Notably, Ivette Sandoval posted another contest with 20 assists, bringing her season total to 444.

Up Next: FNU will face UMFK for a chance at a third-place crown tomorrow at noon.
