UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 9, 2024) — Florida National (22-4) defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent (13-7) for the second time in the 2024 USCAA Championship to take home the program's first third-place crown. The Conquistadors exit Uniontown, Pa., 3-1 overall with four sets lost over three days.

FNU used its knowledge of UMFK to claim the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-18. The Bengals showed some teeth in the third set by winning 25-23 before losing the fourth and final frame 25-10. In the opener, FNU posted 14 kills and allowed just eight from UMFK. Daviona Bernard had two service aces in the frame, and Kitula Amaya Morales had three kills to help push FNU ahead midway through the set. Sofia Moreno Bendala closed out the set with her second kill of the contest.

As play progressed, FNU fell behind 7-0 in the second set before a 19-9 run. UMFK committed eight attacking errors in that same timeframe, and FNU closed out the frame on a kill from Moreno Benadala and an unsuccessful attack by Nathalia Cintro. UMFK prevented a sweep in the third, using 13 kills to hold off FNU by two scores. Notably, Ivette Sandoval played a huge role in FNU's offense and ended the afternoon with 26 assists.

The Conquistadors took care of business in the fourth, posting 17 kills and allowing just four from the Bengals. Moreno Bendala's eighth kill of the afternoon sent UMFK home without any hardware to show for an extremely competitive USCAA tournament. Layla Cortez had four of her team-high 17 kills come in crunch time of the fourth frame and senior Taylor Purdy had 18 digs to lead all FNU players.

FNU improves to 10-1 against the UMFK Bengals all-time and moves to 9-1 against USCAA opponents in 2024.

Up Next: FNU sets its sights on the CAC Tournament in Temple Terrace, Fla., starting Nov. 15.
