Volleyball starts USCAA Pool Play 2-0

UNIONTOWN, Pa. (Nov. 7, 2024) — Florida National (21-3) lived up to its No. 1 overall seed at the USCAA DI Volleyball Tournament, defeating the University of Maine at Fort Kent (12-5) and Baypath University (14-7) on day one of the championship. FNU is now 7-0 against USCAA opponents in 2024.

Florida National was locked in early against the UMFK Bengals. The Conquistadors recorded a 25-13 set one victory before closing the game on 25-9 and 25-19 wins in the last two frames. The Conquistadors tallied 39 kills and 56 digs in the tournament's opener. FNU's Sara Lizano Joya and Layla Cortez combined for six of FNU's 12 kills in the first set. Four straight service aces by Ivette Sandoval put FNU ahead 13-6 and back-to-back successful attacks from Gabriela Gonzalez and Kitula Amaya Morales were just enough to end the period.

The second set was more of the same for the Conquistadors. Sofia Moreno Bendala picked up two consecutive blocks to give Florida National a 5-1 lead early. The Bengals struggled offensively, posting just six kills and eight attacking errors in the set. FNU closed out a competitive third game thanks to four kills by Cortez. Morales' ninth kill of the afternoon ended the game and improved FNU to 9-1 overall against UMFK.

Game two was a bit of a wake-up call for the Conquistadors after they dropped the opening set 25-19. FNU allowed 11 kills in the opener and committed eight attacking errors in the frame to fall behind early. Both teams traded points in the second, with Baypath tying things up on a kill from Anastasiya Tsetsko. FNU went on a 10-4 run to close out the frame. Morales had three kills in that time frame to kick-start an offensive explosion for the Conquistadors.

FNU went on to take care of business in the third, taking a 17-9 lead on a service ace from Purdy. FNU went ahead 24-12 and Baypath would not go away. They put up six unanswered points and forced an FNU timeout. FNU claimed the period off an unsuccessful attack by Lilly Kibbe. The Conquistadors shined in the fourth and final set, boasting an 18-7 lead after two service aces by Daviona Bernard. FNU went on an 8-0 run and were able to make a statement first impression on the national stage.
