Bobcats storm back in OT to spoil FNU’s night in Miami Gardens

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Nov. 7, 2024) — The Conquistadors (0-3) had their 13-point lead with 3:39 left on the clock evaporate, as they fell to the RV St. Thomas Bobcats (1-2) in an overtime thriller. The Bobcats outscored FNU 13-6 in the final stretch for their first win this season 84-77.

The first half was a competitive battle before a packed Fernandez Family Center. FNU trailed 39-35 at the break and were led by 14 points from guard Cameron Johnson. Caelum Ethridge also got a great start on 3-4 shooting for seven first-half points. Center Jonathan Norman made an impact on the bench with five points, but the Conquistadors were still outrebounded 21-10. FNU also conceded eight offensive rebounds and only claimed one offensive board in the first 20 minutes of play.

Colin Nutter's 11 points led STU in the first half, while Esteban Lluberes and Dalon Dean combined for 18. When play resumed in the second, Ethridge led FNU to a double-digit lead for the first time as the transfer ended the frame with 11 points. Down the stretch, FNU conceded their advantage thanks to multiple STU free throw attempts and a clutch game-tying three-point shot from Lluberes with one second on the clock.

In overtime, FNU's offense came to a halt. Ethridge and Johnson accounted for all six of FNU's points in the five-minute period. Meanwhile, Lluberes and Nutter had enough in the tank to post a combined 13 points to lead STU to a much-needed victory at home.

Despite the loss, FNU's offense picked up great momentum and will look to generate the same level of offensive energy in the games that follow.

Up Next: Florida National is in Ave Maria, Fla., Nov. 12 for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Gyrenes.
