Gyrenes hold off Conquistadors 95-67

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Nov. 12, 2024) — Florida National men's basketball (0-4) was once again on the wrong side of a dominant victory, falling to the NAIA's No. 17-ranked Ave Maria University Gyrenes (3-2). The Conquistadors trailed by 12 at halftime and were outscored by 16 in the second period.

FNU's Jeremy Arnum did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first half. The St. Thomas University transfer posted 11 points on 5-11 shooting from the floor. Despite his efficiency, FNU allowed eight made three-pointers from Gyrenes. Jack Watkins impressed in front of the home crowd, ending the first half with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists.

AMU's bench also played a huge role in its success early on as Jaylen White, Jack Poirier and Mark Blaszczyk totaled 18 bench points for the Gyrenes. Florida National had just one made three from Delvin Espinoza and a layup from Jonathan Norman to show for its talented reserves. Luckily for FNU, Caelum Ethridge recorded seven before the break and 6 points courtesy of Gary Adams and Cameron Johnson made it just a 48-36 AMU lead at the break.

The Gyrenes outscored the Conquistadors 22-17 at the halfway mark to take a 70-53 lead. In the final minutes of the period, despite keeping things statistically close, a short-range jump shot by Michael Klekas made it an 80-59 affair. Notably, Johnson proved to be the star of the period for the visiting team. The sophomore ended the game with 14 points in the final frame on a near-perfect 6-7 shooting from the field.

FNU shot 38.5% in its fourth loss of the young 2024 season while the Gyrenes shot 47.3%. AMU improves to 6-8 versus FNU overall and the Conquistasorrs drop to 1-2 over its last three meetings against the Gyrenes.

Up Next: FNU is in Miami, Fla., for an exhibition against the FIU Panthers Nov. 14 at 7 p.m.
