Royals topple Conquistadors in 71-64 thriller

LAKE WALES, Fla. (Nov. 5, 2024) — Florida National (1-2) fell short of a victory against the Warner University Royals (2-0) to drop its second game of the 2024-2025 season. Conquistador Janelisse Marty Marrero led FNU with 25 points, five rebounds and two assists.

Warner took a slight lead in the first, 17-15. They held the Conquistadors to 23% shooting from the floor and 2-9 from the three-point line. Eight different Warner Royals contributed in that first quarter, while most of FNU's offense came from two threes by Kaylee Llanos. FNU began to string together solid offense in the second after Llanos and Jaycee Omeir combined for 10 points before the break. Seven more for Marrero helped FNU outscore Warner 17-15.

Both teams shot over 50% in the third with FNU taking a 23-16 point advantage in the period. Aalyah Watson did most of the heavy lifting for Warner, totaling eight points heading into the fourth. Watson continued to be a headache for FNU's defense and eventually led her team on a 23-12 scoring run in the fourth to close out the Royals' second win of the young season.

Nine made free throws on 12 attempts proved to be the real separator for Warner and FNU when cold on offense at the least opportune time.
Llanos ended the night with 23 points, shooting 2-3 from long range. Omeir continues to impress under the rim with a team-high eight rebounds and seven points.

Up Next: FNU returns to action on Nov. 7 at 5:30 p.m. on the road versus Keiser University.
