FNU records worst loss to Gyrenes in program history

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2024) — The Conquistadors (1-4) had a tough night in Ave Maria, Fla., falling to the AMU Gyrenes (4-2) 90-51. Florida National suffered a scoring slump, shooting 27.4% in the program's worst loss to date against AMU.

The opening quarter was a solid start for the Conquistadors. Florida National trailed by two after Kaylee Llanos connected on a three-pointer to make it a 12-10 ball game. AMU proceeded to go on an 11-2 run to close out the frame. Seven different Gyrenes recorded points in the quarter, and the home team was paced by four-point performances from Lavariah Armstead and Ella Thompson.

The second quarter saw a continuation of absolute offensive domination by Ave Maria. The Gyrenes outscored FNU 23-9, shooting 50% from the floor. FNU's scoring woes seemed to eclipse the half, despite freshman Valeria Castro getting it done with four points on 2-4 shooting. The Conquistadors shot 30.8% to close out the half and looked to shake off a daunting 46-21 halftime score.

When play resumed, FNU was held to just 14 points in the third quarter. Florida National made just two shots in the frame, but Janelisse Marty Marrero managed to post five points thanks to a 3-3 performance from the free-throw line. Jaycee Omeir was also a reliable scorer with a 2-2 performance from the charity stripe en route to four points in the period. AMU could not be denied as the Gyrenes shot 47.6% from the field. Ella Thompson impressed in the frame and did not miss a shot to post eight points heading into the fourth.

Ave Maria closed out the game allowing a game-high 16 Conquistadors points. Marty Marrero and Castro combined for 13 of those points and Omeir forced her way into the paint for a strong layup down the stretch. Notably, Castro posted 14 points while Marty Marrero led the way with 15. Omeir had a near double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
