Conquistadors fall to AMU in back-to-back games

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Dec. 6, 2024) — Women's basketball (1-5) posted another grueling loss to the Ave Maria University Gyrenes (5-2) Friday 99-58. Florida National trailed 53-28 in total rebounds to the Gyrenes, falling in back-to-back fashion at the Tom Golisano Field House.

FNU returned to AMU seeking some redemption from a tough 90-51 loss to the Gyrenes on Nov. 26. It was the program's worst defeat to Ave Maria in its seven-year history, and FNU needed a strong group effort on offense to tackle one of The Sun Conference's strongest teams. Fabiana Nieves put together her best half of basketball this season with 12 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor in the first half. The junior college transfer also went to work on the defensive end with three rebounds and a block. FNU's second-leading scorer, Janelisse Marty Marrero, found her shot in the second quarter to end the half with nine points.

AMU used its depth to its advantage as nine different players contributed to its 46-31 lead at the break. Elena Barnes and star Ella Thompson combined for 10 of AMU's 24 points in the second, and FNU looked for answers on both sides of the ball to keep things interesting down the stretch.

What followed, unfortunately for FNU, was a stagnant third-frame performance from the Conquistadors. AMU blew the game open, outscoring Florida National 32-14 in the second half's opening quarter. Thompson kept it rolling with seven in the third while Casey Humphrey went 2-3 from the field and ended the quarter with seven points of her own. Marty Marrero did most of the heavy lifting for FNU with eight points and a 2-2 performance from the charity stripe.

Facing a daunting deficit, Florida National was held at bay in the fourth. AMU allowed just 13 points in the quarter for the visiting Conquistadors. The home team shot 45.9% in its fifth win of the 2024-25 season, and FNU ended the loss at 36.4%. Marty Marrero led all players with 24 points and eight rebounds. Kyla Cruz Baez had a strong performance with 10 points, and Nieves ended her breakout game with 14.

Notably, junior Aaliyah Abdala made her debut this season after sitting out the 2023-24 campaign. In 19 minutes, Abdala recorded five points, two assists and a steal. AMU bested its previous largest margin of victory against FNU with this 41-point victory and moved to 5-1 overall versus the Conquistadors.

Up Next: Florida National tackles the last three road games of the calendar year, starting Dec. 9 at 5:50 p.m. against Webber International.
