Florida National missteps for first-ever loss to the Virgin Islands

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2024) — The Conquistadors (0-6) were outdueled by the University of the Virgin Islands Buccaneers (1-2) 77-69 to open the Keiser University Thanksgiving Classic. FNU handed the Bucs their first win of the season and their first victory over the Conquistadors in seven meetings.

In the opening half, FNU's Caelum Ethridge and Jeremy Arnum used brilliant basketball to post 13 and 11 points at the break. FNU's lopsided offensive scheme was the exact opposite of the well-balanced period for UVI. Eight different players made it into the box score and Khaleed Heywood put on a clinic with 11 points on 5-5 shooting from the floor. FNU did well under the rim, grabbing 19 rebounds to tie with the visiting Bucs.

At the start of the second half, UVI clung to a 43-38 lead and 12 points from Amayoa'ah Phillips helped keep the Bucs ahead down the stretch. The Virgin Islands managed to barely outscore FNU 34-31 in the period, neutralizing an impressive 16-point half for Ethridge. With 52 seconds left on the clock, a clutch Gary Adam's layup late made it a 71-64 affair. FNU looked to put the Bucs on the line and UVI went 8-8 at the charity stripe to close out the game.

Ethridge posted a team-high 29 along with 12 rebounds for an impressive double-double. Arnum went 7-15 for 17 points and three boards.

Up Next: FNU closes out the KU Thanksgiving Classic tomorrow at 4 p.m. against Brewton-Parker College.
