Three Conquistadors sign off on the 2024 season at NAIA nationals

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Nov. 22, 2024) — Florida National cross country had two men and one woman representing the red, green, and yellow at the 45th Women's and the 69th Men's Annual Cross Country NAIA National Championship. The Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia, Mo., saw 652 student-athletes race to glory on a cold, windy November afternoon.

FNU's two male qualifiers, Mario Martinez and Dimitrios Gkantatsios, stayed relatively close to each other throughout the hilly course. Gkantatsios got the slight edge over his fellow sophomore, posting a time of 29:01.6 to finish 313th. Martinez capped off his first trip to nationals in 315th place, clocking in at 29:22.3.

Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) runner-up Lismar Bentancourt battled a frigid wind to finish 306th at 26:43.5. Bentancourt was incredible for the Conquistadors this season, becoming the program's second-ever conference championship runner-up and a three-time CAC Runner of the Week. 

Overall, the College of Idaho took home the NAIA title in the men's 8K with a score of 87. Oklahoma City's Evert Silva was the individual winner in the men's race with a stunning time of 23:14.0. The Master's University women's team was crowned champions in the 6K, scoring 92. Despite the title, it was Taylor University's Jaynie Halterman who completed the course first. The freshman crossed the finish line with a time of 20:24.7
