Florida National moves on to CAC title match

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2024) — Conquistador volleyball (25-4) earned its second 3-0 victory at the 2024 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Volleyball Championship, defeating Carolina University (16-10) in the semifinal. CAC Co-Attacker of the Year Layla Cortez led the charge with 14 kills.

In the opening set, FNU grabbed a 25-15 victory after Cortez recorded seven kills. Kitula Amaya Morales got off to a great start with two kills of her own and assists leader Ivette Sandoval was responsible for eight in the opening frame. Carolina was stagnant offensively with nine attacking errors. In the second, FNU posted 13 kills while allowing seven for the Bruins. An attack error from Britney Comolli in the early goings of the period gave FNU a 4-1 lead.

Florida National kept it going down the stretch of the second, using two kills from Elis Cordova-Millet to rattle off a 5-0 run to close the set 25-15. In the third and final set, back-to-back kills from Sion Murrain helped the Bruins rally to make it a 20-18 FNU lead. A service ace from Nicole Laezza made things even closer, but FNU did not crumble under the pressure.

Morales and Cortez posted two and three kills, respectively, to end the game.
FNU improved to 9-1 in CAC play, defeating Carolina in the first meeting between these two programs.

Up Next: FNU seeks its second title in four years tonight against tournament host Florida College. The match is set for 7 p.m.
