FNU earns CAC runner-up for the second time in three seasons

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Nov. 16, 2024) — Conquistador volleyball (25-5) dropped a tough, bittersweet match to the Florida College Falcons (21-8) to close out the 2024 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Volleyball Championship. FNU kept things interesting till the very end, ultimately falling in the final set of the conference title match 29-27.

In the first, Florida College took a 1-0 lead thanks to a 25-19 victory in the opening set. FNU looked great in the early portion of the frame, taking a 5-2 lead off two attacking errors from Cassidy Lee. Elis Cordova-Millet was clutch early with two kills while Kitula Amaya Morales and Layla Cortez combined for three. Despite the early lead, FC battled back for a 19-15 advantage late in the first.

Fiona Sampaio's sixth kill in the frame ended the first and set up a thrilling second set. Florida College found a solid rhythm at the net for a stunning 21 kills. Lee's third kill of the set made it 21-10 in favor of the Falcons and back-to-back kills from Michelle Taylor ended the frame. Cortez posted four kills before each team switched benches for the next game.

Down 2-0, FNU found another gear with its season on the line. The Conquistadors won the kill race in the third 17-10 and an attacking error from Carolina Ramalheira gave FNU a 24-15 lead. Despite the deficit, FC got themselves out of their scoring funk to make it a 24-22 affair on seven unanswered points. FNU finally caught a break after Teixeira's attack went awry to end the frame in the Conquistadors' favor.

The fourth and final set was a thrilling display of resilience from both squads. FC and FNU traded points most of the fourth before FNU grabbed a 21-16 lead on a 5-0 run. However, the Falcons did not go away. FC posted a 5-1 run to get things back within anyone's grasp. The next 13 points were a brilliant example of relentless as each side continued to tie things up whenever one team got ahead.

FC punched a ticket to NAIA nationals on kills from Sampaio and Ramalheira to give the Falcons the win. Cortez and Cordova-Millet combined for 20 kills and Morales had a team-high four blocks and 18 digs. Junior Ivette Sandoval and freshman Emily Robello combined for 33 assists.

FNU ends the 2024 season with a 9-2 record against CAC opponents, both losses coming at the hands of Florida College. The Conquistadors are now 6-17 against the Falcons all time and have suffered CAC tournament losses to FC the last three seasons.
