Conquistadors keep things close in exhibition loss to Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Nov. 13, 2024) — Florida National (1-3) competed valiantly against a tough NCAA DII Barry Buccaneer (3-0) squad Wednesday night. The Conquistador fell 100-70, led by 28 points from Janelisse Marty Marrero and 18 from senior Kyla Cruz Baez. 

Barry came into this contest fresh off a 30-point victory against Christian Brothers in Memphis, Tenn. The Bucs wasted no time getting off to a great start in the first half versus FNU, leading 62-22 at the break. Nine different Barry players scored in the first two quarters, but BU was led by senior guard Audrey Jennings' 22-point performance. Marrero accounted for 13 of FNU's 22 before halftime.

The second period saw Cruz Baez explode for 15 points thanks to a 6-7 performance from the free-throw line. After a scoreless first half, guard Kaylee Llanos found some separation to connect on three shots from behind the arch. The Hialeah, Fla., native ended the night with 17 points and three assists. 

The Conquistadors, collectively, were able to outscore Barry 48-38 down the stretch but could not overcome the large deficit they conceded early. Notably, Marrero posted her first double-double of 2024 after grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds.  Jaycee Omeir followed closely behind with eight boards and four points through 29 minutes of play. 

Up Next: Florida National goes on a well-deserved 13-day break before traveling to Ave Maria, Fla., for a 5 p.m. contest.
