Rams rattle off four goals to defeat Conquistadors

MOBILE, Ala. (Oct. 7, 2024) - Florida National (3-6-0) ended a long road trip with a 4-1 loss to the NAIA's No. 7-ranked Mobile University Rams (10-1-1) Monday. This is the first meeting between these two storied programs, and the Rams did not miss any opportunity to shine in this early October match.

The Rams' efficiency was stellar, taking 12 shots en route to their four goals. FNU attempted six shots through both halves and just two in the second despite facing a two-score deficit entering the period. In the opening frame, Emilio Cazares put his team ahead three minutes into the game thanks to a crafty pass from goalkeeper Ty Turner. FNU went to work in the midfield and leveled the game four minutes later with an unassisted score by number 10 Juan Pugin.

Pugin's second goal of 2024 was not enough to garner a huge momentum shift, as Joseph McMahon and Jeb Scarbrough orchestrated Cazares' second goal of the contest in the 25th minute. The senior from Monterrey, Mexico, earned his hat trick before the half expired on another pass from McMahon. Filipe Sette Ribeiro had a good look off his right foot just before the break that sailed high, and FNU looked to regroup in the second half.

The Rams, however, shut the door on any resemblance of an FNU comeback thanks to an unfortunate goal by Henrique Mendes. Mobile continued to stay aggressive on both sides of the ball despite its lead, even picking up two yellow cards in the second. Pugin, Ricardo Delwing and Geronimo Luna Grebe were all accessed yellow cards before the final whistle sounded on the pitch of The Jungle.

Goalkeeper, Juan Manuel Fermoselle collected four saves and Turner ended his exceptional afternoon with three.

Up Next: Weather permitting, Florida National heads to West Palm Beach, Fla., for a match against Palm Beach Atlantic University on Oct. 11 at 6 p.m.
