No. 22 Lions utilize 30-point halftime lead to best FNU 99-47

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Oct. 29, 2024) — The Conquistadors were overpowered by the NAIA's No.22-ranked Florida Memorial University Lions on Tuesday. This 99-47 defeat at the hands of FMU (3-0) marks the second time in as many games that Florida National (0-2) has lost to a Sun Conference school after opening the season on Oct. 24.

Florida National fell behind early, scoring just 19 in the first half on 7-35 shooting from the field. Leading scorer Cameron Johnson was held to eight points despite playing all 20 minutes of the frame. Matias Montezuma provided a bit of relief on a made three but ended the half just 1-6 from behind the three-point line. Montezuma's triple and a layup from big man Vejas Matekonis accounted for all five of FNU's points off the bench in the half.

For the Lions, the star of the first was Latavious Mitchell. The senior from Indianapolis, Ind., posted a near double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. Using all of his 6-8, 220-pound frame, Mitchell pummeled FNU under the rim and the Lions entered the second half with 31 total rebounds to FNU's 13.

The second half was even more successful for the home team, as the Lions outscored FNU 50-28 and were one point shy of their first 100-point game of the season. The Lions were an efficient machine on offense, going 20-30 from the floor and connecting on seven of nine three-pointers attempted. The Conquistadors struggled to knock down shots, shooting 38% from the field to close out the contest. Four different Lions cracked double-digit points in the box score, while Johnson once again led the way for FNU with 12 points.

On a positive note, Ralph Laurent had a breakout game with nine points. The sophomore held up well against FMU's stout rotation, posting two boards and a steal. Transfer Jeremy Arnum and veteran Gary Adams combined for 14 points and six rebounds as the Conquistadors dropped to 5-9 against the Lions all time.
