Conquistadors move past second set blunder for 3-1 win

BABSON PARK, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2024) - Florida National (18-2) bested Webber International University (7-12) on Wednesday 3-1. The Conquistadors claimed their first road win against the Warriors in program history, improving their overall record versus the Warriors to 4-11.

FNU dominated in the opening set 25-22 before losing the next game 25-11. The Conquistadors did manage to bounce back to win the match in the third and fourth frames, picking up 27-25 and 25-23 victories, respectively. The opening frame was a close battle for momentum, as FNU and Webber traded points for the majority of the set. Two kills from Layla Cortez helped FNU mount a 4-0 run to close the set out with a three-point victory. What followed was a bad frame for FNU. WIU jumped to a 10-1 lead early, only allowing 11 Conquistador points in the set.

FNU quickly shook off this upset, performing a masterful win in game three after falling behind 20-19 on a kill from Abby Leonard. A kill by Ariana Long and an attacking error from Daphne Wibranowski allowed FNU to go back on top 2-1. To its credit, Webber continued to fight in the fourth and final frame. Both teams had 11 kills in the fourth, but FNU managed three fewer attacking errors than the home team.

Taylor Purdy had two service aces in the final set and Cortez was able to end the match on her ninth kill of the evening.

Kitula Amaya Morales and Cortez combined for 16 kills and Morales had a team-high 25 digs. Gabriela Gonzalez picked up the Conquistadors' lone solo block of the match, while Ivette Sandoval posted another game with at least 20 assists.

Up Next: FNU is in Miami Gardens, Fla., to face the NAIA's top-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats on Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
