FNU stumbles against No. 10 Bobcats on the road

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Nov. 1, 2024) — Florida National (18-3) put up a solid showing against the NAIA's No. 10-ranked St. Thomas University Bobcats (25-0) in Miami Gardens, Fla. STU took the first two sets 25-16 before a 25-12 win in set three brought home its 18th sweep of the 2024 season.

Alexandra Bruno and Carolina Cruz combined for 22 kills while Layla Cortez had a team-high 11. Florida National drops to 3-8 against the Bobcats all time and this marks the fourth sweep for STU against the Conquistadors in program history.

Things were close in the first set after a block from Elis Cordova Millet and two kills from Cortez helped level the score at four all. Kitula Amaya Morales and Gabriela Gonzalez teamed up for a block on Isabel Narbutas to make it an 8-7 STU lead. The Bobcats eventually went on to score seven unanswered points before closing out the game on a kill from Sana Dennis.

The second frame proved to be a dominant affair for the Bobcats. Bruno's kill about midway made it a 10-5 STU lead. Back-to-back successful attacks from Carolina Cruz and Payton Bertke gave STU a 2-0 advantage heading into the third and final set.

Bruno had four service aces in the final stretch, which put the Bobcats up 20-8 late and her 11th kill of the afternoon closed things out to keep STU undefeated through 25 matches. Notably, Ivette Sandoval had a team-leading 11 assists and nine digs in the contests. Morales ended the match with four kills and seven digs.
