FNU’s gritty battle in Babson Park ends in a tie

BABSON PARK, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2024) — Florida National's men's soccer team (4-6-2) pulled off a 3-3 tie against the Webber International University Warriors (5-5-2) on Wednesday. The Conquistadors fought through two red cards and a late deficit to post their second tie in as many contests.

This is the first time FNU has tied against Webber, as they now hold a 1-1-1 record against the Warriors all time.

The first half saw FNU lead the shots race with nine attempts but relied on an own goal in the 30th minute to escape the frame tied at 2-2. Miguel de Silva was the first to break through and get a goal on the board thanks to a pass from Dylan Hawley. The Warriors then took a 2-0 lead in the 16th minute on an unassisted goal by Jesus Perez. Midfielder Henrique Jordao was a hero of the first half with his spectacular goal in the 23rd minute assisted by Patrick De Oliveira Nunes, his second assist of the 2024 season. FNU retired the first half, allowing four Webber shots and one corner kick. Webber goalie Ben Parkinson was under fire for a good portion of the contest, ending the match with five critical saves.

This match also proved to be a calamity of cautions, as the referees handed out three yellow cards, and one player on each side was ejected with a red card. FNU's Jose Luis Hurtado was given his second yellow before the period came to a close, while Webber's master passer, Hawley, was shown the door with a direct red card.

Three minutes into the second, a short-handed Webber squad put themselves in front on a score from Lucianno Vera. Two more yellow cards were given out before Marcos Bakale answered the call with FNU's third goal of the afternoon with about 25 minutes left on the clock. Unfortunately for the Conquistadors, they played the final stretch without defender Geronimo Luna Grebe after he picked up his second yellow card of the match. Goalscorer Vera followed closely behind with the game's fourth ejection after claiming his second caution in the 85th.

Santiago Moreno had FNU's final shot of the game, which sailed wide, and both teams settled for a stalemate in what proved to be a heated battle between these two Florida powerhouses.

Up Next: FNU's regular-season finale is next Wednesday at 7 p.m. versus the Barry University Buccaneers on the road.
