Bakale’s second goal in two games helps FNU tie Lions Saturday

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 19, 2024) — Florida National's (4-6-1) first tie of the 2024 season came in its final home game against the Florida Memorial Lions (4-4-2). The Conquistadors took advantage of a first-half goal from senior Marcos Bakale to hold off a fiery Lions squad at Milander Park.

The last time these teams met was in early September, when the Lions scored their first win against FNU in program history, 3-2. This rematch saw FNU take an early lead after a stunning goal from Marcos Bakale in the 14th minute. Henrique Jordao and Jose Luis Hurtado combined for a leading pass right down the middle that found Bakale waiting to pounce.

After breaking out a classic backflip in celebration, Bakale and FNU helped the Lions scoreless the remainder of the frame. FMU attempted three shots while FNU produced 11 shots and five corner kicks.

The second half saw FMU make adjustments and turn up the aggression on defense. Five yellow cards were handed out in the second between both squads. FNU could not hold off an attacking FMU squad. Soon enough, Cesar Herrero converted a deflected cross from Diego Olguín set up by a Carlos Montenegro corner kick to level the game once again in the 68th minute.

The Conquistadors allowed an unprecedented eight corners to the Lions after allowing just one in the first half.

FNU's offense could not break through in the closing minutes and FNU's defense retreated to avoid another upset in 2024. To his credit, goalkeeper Juan Manuel Fermoselle stepped up with five saves despite picking up a yellow card in the closing minutes.

Up Next: FNU takes on its second to last game of 2024 on Oct. 23 in Babson Park, Fla., against Webber International University.
