Lazaro Chamizo

Lazaro Chamizo joined Florida National’s men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in 2024 with seven years of experience as a college player and coach. 

Before FNU, Chamizo spent four seasons working in high school basketball for two well-established programs in the South Florida area. From 2020-2022, he was the head coach of the junior varsity team at Coral Park High School. He then became Coral Park’s head varsity coach the following season. His latest head coaching stint was with South Miami High School, where he led the Cobras to seven wins in 2023-2024.


Along with coaching, Chamizo has served as a team attendant for the Miami Heat since 2021. The job entailed working game day operations, rebounding and assisting with player warm-ups. 

Chamizo also started his own basketball skills training business in Miami. Over the years, Coach Laz has trained hundreds of South Miami, Kendall and Pinecrest athletes. He specializes in skill and player development for athletes of all ages including high-level college, professional and NBA athletes in the off-season. 

In 2024, Chamizo made his coaching debut at the Miami Pro League, held at Miami Senior High School. He coached team Level Up alongside FNU’s head coach, Daniel Pressman.

Coach Laz played three years of basketball while attending St. Thomas University. He graduated with a bachelor's in communications and a minor in sports administration. He enjoys working out, fishing, hunting and outdoor running in his spare time.
