Conquistadors end week four with shutout loss to FMU

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Sept. 4, 2026) — Conquistador women's soccer (0-4-0) saw their shot at a road win vanish with three second half goals by the Florida Memorial University Lions (2-2-0) Friday. FNU tallied six shots and goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza claimed five saves in the Conquistadors' fourth loss in as many matches.

Florida Memorial's second match this season on home turf Sept. 4 preceded a nine-goal shutout win over Florida Polytechnic University, the largest margin of victory and goals scored in a match under head coach Lue Young. Florida National looked to shake off a 3-0 loss to the St. Thomas University Bobcats on Aug. 28 but were unable to deter a red-hot Lion offense for the full 90 minutes of play.

The first period saw both teams locked in a scoreless battle in the middle of the pitch, despite FMU rattling off seven shots to Florida National's four. FMU goalkeeper Isabelle Mapanao earned two saves off shots by Gabriella Quezada and Mette Battling in the 31st and fifth minutes of play, respectively. Meanwhile, Oropeza tallied three saves on the opposite side of the pitch. Fouls were scarce in the opening half with four combined whistles at the break (three for FMU, one for FNU).

The second half saw the home team break the game open in the 51st minute of the match. Alexia Medrano Martinez laced the Lions' first goal seconds after a corner kick was delivered by Emily Campos. FMU earned its second goal of the afternoon thanks to Jennifer Canarutto's unassisted score in the 74th minute.

With six minutes to play, Campos came up big again on a smart pass to set up the Lions' final goal of the match by Paula Exposito Roman. FNU was held to two shots in the final 45, while the Lions forced the issue with six (five on goal).

This was Florida National's fourth loss in its last five contests against its cross-town rival, its last win coming in October 2022.

Up Next: FNU returns to home turf for an 11:30 a.m. head-to-head against the visiting Warner University Royals Sept. 10.
