Women’s soccer exits Ave Maria with first deadlock of 2026

AVE MARIA, Fla. (Sept. 19, 2026) — Florida National women's soccer (0-4-1) stood tall against a tough Ave Maria University (3-1-1) squad Saturday night, drawing the first tie of the 2026 season for either team. Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza earned her first clean sheet of the year, recording three crucial saves for the visiting Conquistadors.

FNU entered this match with four consecutive losses and on the hunt to avenge a 5-0 home loss to the Gyrenes in 2025. The first half was promising for the Conquistadors, holding a challenging Gyrenes offense to just five shots and forcing keeper Hannah Kelly to stay engaged throughout the frame. The Conquistadors had great looks at a goal before the break, with attempts by Mara Graef and Gabriella Quezada sailing wide and high, respectively.

Debbie Yance in the 27th minute forced Kelly's first save of the game, as both teams headed to the break without a much-needed goal. There were 11 combined fouls, with Mia Isabella Santana picking up a yellow card in the 37th minute.

The second half proved to be just as fruitful as the first for the Conquistadors and the Gyrenes. Ave Maria did rattle off eight shots but could not convert any of them into a game-winner, as Oropeza added one save to her pair of stops in the first half. Gyrenes Claire Wrobleski and Breanna McBride were given yellow cards in the final 45 minutes, as Latyfath Ubeda (2) and Maria Franca missed the mark on FNU's final three shots of the match.

This tie moves FNU to 2-4-2 against the Gyrenes since 2017, earning its first-ever scoreless tie of the series.

Up Next: Florida Memorial makes the short trip to Milander Park next Tuesday for an 11 a.m. match against the Conquistadors.
