Lightning delays plague a 2-0 loss for women’s soccer

HIALEAH, Fla. (Sept. 22, 2026) — Florida National women's soccer (0-5-1) faced a two-hour lightning delay at Milander Park in its second loss this season at the hands of the Florida Memorial University Lions (5-3-0). FNU posted a strong first half with five promising shots at goal before the Lions scored two second-half stunners to upset the home team.

The last time these two teams met on Sept. 4, FMU had a strong second frame to claim a 3-0 win at Dr. Lester Brown Park. This was more of the same for the Lions Tuesday morning, handling a well-attacking Florida National squad through the first 45 minutes of play. Natalya Paula, Mara Graef and Latyfath Ubeda all had great looks at an opening score in the first 20 minutes that all missed the mark in their own way.

The Lions were also pressing the issue of a first-half goal, collecting eight shots and forcing a couple of clutch blocks by Angelina Carreno and Paula. It was in the 38th minute, however, that lightning triggered the lengthy delay in Hialeah, Fla., and it took multiple hours for FNU to complete the final few minutes of the first.

After a shortened halftime break, the second period was dominated by the visiting Lions. In the 58th, Javine McKnight used an unselfish pass by Rudo Marufu to break through for the first goal of the match. FMU put the finishing touches on the win with an unassisted score by Lumturie Berushi.

Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza ended her fifth loss of 2026 with two saves, as FNU was held to just four shot attempts in crunch time. Three FMU players were assessed yellow cards in the match (Marufu, McKnight and Jasmine Sawyers), as Gabriella Quezada was the lone FNU player to earn a yellow on an unnecessary takedown with two minutes remaining.

Up Next: FNU seeks its first win Saturday against Florida Polytechnic University. Kickoff from Lakeland, Fla., is set for 3 p.m.
