Women’s soccer falls prey to Bobcats in 3-0 defeat

HIALEAH, Fla. (Aug. 28, 2026) — Florida National women's soccer (0-3-0) remains winless at Milander Park, missing the mark in a 3-0 loss to the St. Thomas University Bobcats (3-0-0) Friday. Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza had a busy afternoon with ten saves, as FNU conceded its largest loss so far in 2026.

In the opening 45 minutes, both teams were evenly matched on the pitch, but STU had a slight edge in time of possession. Controlling the ball and the pace of the match, the Bobcats totaled 14 shots in the first half and held FNU to just one by Mara Graef (that sailed wide). Despite constant pressure on Oropeza, the veteran goalie kept a clean sheet until a foul in the box awarded STU the game's only penalty. Number 32 Rebecca Louis stepped up for the visiting team and connected on the game's first score with six minutes left in the period.

At the half, the Bobcats' captain Sierra Olivo recorded the match's first yellow card on a reckless tackle (42.25), and FNU looked to push the pace on the opposite side of the pitch to give STU goalkeeper Emma Butcher some much-needed pressure.

Unfortunately for FNU, STU's offense was more formidable out of the break. Leenah Bigby laced the second goal of the afternoon after a solid, unselfish pass by Hanah Gonzalez in the 70th. Oropeza added six saves in the final minutes, her final on a shot by Bigby in the 89th that rebounded off her gloves to the waiting right foot of Maria Mendes for the senior's first goal of 2026.

Notably, Debbie Yance and Sofia Lorusso attempted to break through with shots in the final 11 minutes that did not do the trick at Mialander Park. FNU drops to 11-0 all-time against the Bobcats and 0-2 at home.

Up Next: The Conquistadors make the short trip to Miami Gardens, Fla., for an 11 a.m. contest against Florida Memorial University.
