Conquistadors give up three goals in first road loss

SARASOTA, Fla. (Aug. 25, 2026) — Conquistador women's soccer (0-2-0) will have to wait until Friday for another chance at a 2026 victory, losing 3-1 to the New College of Florida Banyans (2-0-0) Tuesday.

NCF hosted FNU fresh off an incredible 16-0 win over Florida Polytechnic University to open its fall season, as FNU looked to shake off a 2-0 loss to Viterbo University last Thursday.

The first half was dominated by a stifling Banyan offense, culminating in a goal by Naomi Woerner in the 18th minute and by Grace Carpenter in the 28th. Woerner capitalized on miscommunication by FNU's defensive backline, volleying a shot into an empty net to break the nil-nil deadlock in the first. Carpenter's second goal of 2026 came off her team's first corner of the match. The midfielder used an accurate header to finish off a stellar cross into the box by Julia Moore.

FNU was held to just three shots in the opening 45 (NCF had eight), with Mette Battling forcing an early save by goalie Avaya Wright. Two minutes into the match. Battling had two of FNU's attempts at goal, while defender Angelina Carreno had her shot sail high in the 15th. 

Despite the two-goal deficit, FNU turned up the intensity in the final half of the contest with eight shots in the period. NCF was just as hungry to keep their opponents at bay, scoring their third goal of the afternoon off the foot of Faith Hardy in the 53rd minute.

Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza posted three saves in the closing minutes, and Sofia Lorusso's late-minute score on a free kick by Carreno helped the Conquistadors avoid their second shutout loss of 2026.

Up Next: The Conquistadors and St. Thomas University are set to face off Friday at Milander Park. The action will commence at 10:30 a.m.
