Women’s soccer falls in home opener against Viterbo

HIALEAH, Fla. (Aug. 20, 2026) — Florida National (0-1-0) ran into a tough Viterbo University (1-0-0) squad to open the 2026 season at Milander Park, conceding a pair of second-half goals in the defeat. Goalkeeper Andrea Oropeza had three saves in the loss, as FNU tallied 16 shots.

Florida National had an early start Thursday, kicking off at 8 a.m. against the team from Wisconsin. Under new head coach, Jaques Calderon Isdra, the Conquistadors held their own in the first half. FNU allowed just two shots for the V-Hawks before the break and tallied seven of their own on the other side of the pitch.

Sofia Lorusso was critical to FNU's pressure early, forcing a pair of saves by keeper Baylee Faucett, and FNU's Luiza Ferreira picked up the lone yellow of the contest in the 13th minute.

After halftime, it didn't take long for Viterbo to get on the board, capitalizing on a penalty award after a risky tackle by Latyfath Ubeda. Kelcie Karweick stopped up to the marker for the V-Hawks and used a powerful kick to the bottom-left corner of the net to put her team on top for the first time in 2026.

To its credit, FNU continued to push through, with promising shots by Maria Franca, Lorusso and Mara Graef sailing wide or into the waiting hands of second-half goalkeeper Madison Zilm. Viterbo put the finishing touches on their victory with an 84th-minute stunner scored by Brynlee Kelly,

This was FNU's first-ever match against the V-Hawks, ending with a game-high 16 shots (eight on goal) compared to just nine from Viterbo.

Up Next: FNU hits the road for the first time in 2026, meeting New College of Florida for a 4 p.m. game August 25.
