Hicks and FNU leave it all on the floor in 78-72 loss to Haskell

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (Feb. 28, 2026) — Senior Hermione Hicks had a spectacular afternoon against a tough Haskell Indian Nations University (12-16) team Saturday. Despite 18 points on four made threes from the Panama City, Panama, native, Florida National (12-14) fell to Haskell 78-72 after a 23-point fourth quarter had them knocking on the door of an upset in the semifinal round of the 2026 Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Women's Basketball Championship.

The third meeting between these conference foes this season was the Hicks' show, as the stretch forward posted nine of FNU's 17 in the first quarter. HINU held the 24-17 advantage heading into the second; however, Ivy Fox impressed with nine in the frame as well. Haskell's shooting capabilities also made an appearance early, with four made threes in nine attempts for the No. 2 seed in the tournament.

Before the break, Haskell went on a little bit of a run to boast a 43-30 lead. CAC first team honoree and Defensive Player of the Year, Kaylee Llanos, was contained offensively with five points in the first 20 minutes of play. Valeria Cifuentes got to the rim and the free-throw line with ease for six points in the second. For Haskell, Tierzah Penn's seven points were crucial to her team's run in the final minutes of the half, and HINU shared the ball with ease for seven second-quarter assists.

After the break, Haskell seemed to have an answer for every FNU counterattack. Llanos would score a basket at one end, but HINU would answer back with a made three from Penn or a transition layup off the hands of Fox. HINU knocked down eight free throws in the third and shot 46.7% despite Llanos and Maria De Gracia Karamanites combining for 12 of FNU's 19 heading into the fourth.

The Conquistadors pulled out all the stops in the fourth, especially Hicks. The forward knocked down a big three in the closing minutes as FNU used a pair of technical fouls on Jayla Flient and Fox to cut HINU's lead to two with 30 seconds remaining. FNU's Karla Quintero was also on the line a pair of times after drawing fouls underneath the rim. Unfortunately, Haskell grabbed a timely turnover on Llanos and was able to ice the game at the charity stripe with made shots by Allie Greene.

Along with Hicks' 18-point swan song, Llanos paced the team with 19 while Cifuentes and De Gracia combined for 22 points on 8-19 shooting from the floor.
