Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Brenda Bogle

A solid opening-set performance not enough to keep AMU at bay Tuesday

HIALEAH, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2026) —Conquistador volleyball (6-14) earned an impressive 25-20 win over Ave Maria University (8-9) to open its third home game of 2026, but could not hold on late in a 3-1 loss at Bucky Dent Park.

Florida National showed great improvement in Tuesday's hard-fought loss to the Gyrenes, making up serious ground after a 3-0 loss in Ave Maria, Fla., in early September. FNU's offense was capitalizing on a slow start from the Gyrenes to garner a 24-18 lead off a kill by Diana Stetsko in crunch time of the first. Chriselle Ferdinand's seventh kill of the frame was exactly what FNU needed to grab a 1-0 match advantage, as the sophomore outside hitter came out swinging in set two for a pair of blocks.

Despite a great defensive effort from Ferdinand and Camila Polanco, AMU ate away at a three-point FNU lead midway through the game, outlasting FNU 25-20 thanks to 13 kills in the second. FNU was held to nine kills and committed seven attacking errors before looking to regroup in the third.

Unfortunately, Ave Maria would not let up defensively, with Lucy Hudson ending the game recording seven critical blocks. The Gyrenes length at the net and 19 digs from libero Maylis Detar were too powerful a combination for FNU's offense to overcome, scoring just 16 kills in the final two sets. The third game was a 25-18 win for the Gyrenes, who went ahead 19-11 as FNU struggled to generate movement on their side of the court. Elle Malczewski's sixth kill of the evening ended the third frame and set up a must-win fourth for FNU down 2-1.

It was a true back-and-forth battle in the fourth, as each team exchanged blows until an error in service rotation for the Conquistadors put AMU up 21-20. This diminished a nice 6-1 run for the Conquistadors at the tail end of the game. AMU went on to claim four of the next five points to exit Hialeah, Fla., the victor.

FNU remains winless at home so far in 2026 and is 2-3 over its last five matches. Moreover, AMU now leads this series 21-5 and has extended its win streak against FNU to 17.

Up Next: Florida National remains home Friday for a 7 p.m. rematch against Florida Memorial University.
