FNU concedes a close contest to Buffaloes

LAWRENCE, Kan. (Jan. 17, 2026) — Florida National (8-9) was outlasted in its final game of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic in Lawrence, Kansas, by the Arkansas Baptist College Buffaloes (11-3), 72-68. Ziul Gonzalez posted her third game in her last five starts with at least 20 points despite FNU allowing a 16-25 free-throw shooting night for the Buffaloes.

The beginning of this matchup for the Conquistadors saw ABC dominate the opening quarter to take a 19-11 lead behind an eight-point frame by Emani Wofford. Gonzalez and Kaylee Llanos accounted for seven of FNU's 11 in the period, and the Conquistadors struggled to take care of the ball with seven giveaways to open the action at Haskell Indian Nations University Saturday afternoon. The Conquistadors shot 15.8% but got back in the swing of things with a 25-point second quarter.

FNU entered halftime with a 36-33 lead, shooting 55% from the field with seven crucial points from Gonzalez to highlight the quarter. Valeria Cifuentes provided great offense with four points, while Kaylynn Jean-Gilles provided a couple of baskets underneath the rim. Maria De Gracia Karamanites led all players with three rebounds as FNU looked to hold off the Buffaloes in what looked to be a tightly contested game in the final twenty minutes.

In the second half, FNU was held to eight points, while 11 from ABC was enough to tie things up at 44. Both teams shot the ball well over 50% and kept either side of the charity stripe for the entire duration of the third. The same could not be said in the fourth, as FNU allowed Arkansas an 11-14 shooting performance from the line to close out the game.

Ah'Jaia Kenner gave ABC a fragile 57-56 lead, but a layup from Jade Fry put the Buffaloes up 59-56 with 100 seconds left on the clock. This forced FNU into a bit of a time crunch, but FNU did keep things close despite 11 points from Zaccheya Jackson to end the quarter. Jackson also went 8-8 from the charity stripe in the closing seconds to score the Buffaloes' first program win over FNU in three meetings between these conference rivals.

Gonzalez outscored all players with 21, while Llanos had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Jaylyn Laguna posted a nice afternoon with 12 points and three rebounds, while De Gracia was held to seven points and six rebounds in 38 minutes of play.

Up Next: Florida National returns to Florida for a 5:30 p.m. road game against the Florida Memorial University Lions Jan. 21.
