FNU shocks WAU with a thrilling 79-74 victory in Temple Terrace

TEMPLE TERRACE, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2026) — Florida National women's basketball (7-8) held off a tough Washington Adventist University Shock (4-6) team in its final game of the Continental Athletic Conference (CAC) Classic hosted by Florida College. The Conquistadors scored their first conference win of the season and defeated the Shock for the first time in program history.

Florida National had a less-than-ideal start against the Shock in the first, trailing 21-17 and shooting 37.5% from the floor. Ziul Gonzalez had a great first quarter after a stellar 26-point outing the previous afternoon. She tallied six quick points, while Maria De Gracia Karamanites and Naomi Barabie combined for seven points off FNU's bench to keep WAU within reach.

The Shock were paced by a tough 10-point quarter by Heather Middleton to go along with four rebounds in seven minutes for the senior guard. What proved to be the difference maker between these two teams was WAU going 3-6 from the three-point line, while FNU connected on one of six attempts heading into the second.

FNU commanded a brilliant second quarter, outscoring the Shock 26-11 to take a 43-32 lead into the break. FNU's defense allowed only four successful shot attempts from the field for WAU, and the team made a collective effort offensively. Eight different players contributed points from all over the court, and Kaylee Llanos came alive from behind the arc. The junior guard connected on a pair of threes, and Jessica Carreras had five critical points in a couple of minutes of play.

FNU's defense was a major factor in its timely run, as the Conquistadors ended the frame with five steals and forced eight Shock turnovers.

WAU went on a mini redemption tour in the third, holding FNU to just 25% shooting in the quarter and making it a 56-51 Conquistador lead entering the fourth period. Isabela Lujan-Gonzales and Angeleen Mulero combined for 10 Shock points. At the same time, FNU's Jaylyn Laguna and Madison Betancourt-Pina knocked down a couple of shots to keep their team just in front of a relentless WAU team.

The Shock's toughness set up a competitive fourth quarter of CAC basketball, where WAU kept attacking the rim to eventually take a 70-69 lead off a layup from Lujan-Gonzales with 69 seconds remaining. Lujan-Gonzales made it a three-point lead WAU's next time down the court on a transition score at the basket.

To her credit, De Gracia was elite at the line (4-4) in the closing seconds to put FNU back in front by one. Out of a 30-second timeout, Florida National went to Gonzalez for a crafty, clutch layup with 27 seconds left that put FNU ahead by three and forced WAU to put FNU at the line to buy time.

Florida National closed out the win 4-6 from the free-throw line, sending WAU back to Maryland with a winless weekend.

Llanos commanded a team-high 17 points along with three rebounds and three assists. De Gracia posted a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Gonzalez heads home with 15 points, three rebounds and two assists.

Up Next: CAC action continues for Florida National as the Conquistadors head to Lawrence, Kansas, for games against Hesston College and Arkansas Baptist College Jan. 16-17.
